This e-mail summarises the various communications from Hockey NSW and Sydney South Hockey Association re returning to hockey in a Covid-safe environment.
Hockey Season Facts (as at 31 May)
- The season for all competitions that Bosco teams participate in recommences on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th July.
- The exact format for these competitions remains unknown at this stage. As a result of that, we still can’t confirm what the fees should be to ensure we cover the cost of entering teams in these competitions.
- For SSHA competitions, the results of our recent member survey were:
- 61.5% of respondents voted for a 17 July to 3 October season with no double headers
- The rest voted for a 17th July to 31 October season with no double headers.
- Those survey results will be provided to the Association to voice our thoughts on the SSHA season.
- Marang Parklands Hockey Fields re-opened yesterday for training in small groups on a Saturday morning. Bosco intends to make use of this opportunity after the upcoming long weekend.
- There are a range of protocols to go through to return to training and playing, summarised below.
Returning to Training
Hockey NSW has released some checklists for both individuals and Clubs to consider ahead of any return to training.
These checklists highlight personal responsibilities, as well as that of Club Executives which should be considered before returning to training. These lists aren't exhaustive and not all recommendations will be mandatory, however we encourage everyone to consider the steps we can take to make the hockey field a safe environment.
The individual checklist is available here.
The Club checklist is available here.
The SSHA has released a Covid-19 Safety Plan to enable a safe return to training for Association Clubs. A copy of this Plan is attached to this e-mail.
To enable Bosco to return to training, the Association requires us to uphold the following points as we plan for these sessions:
- Each session can contain a maximum of 10 participants, including coaches;
- All players that attend a session must be recorded and the attendance form sent to the Association;
- People can only train with one group of 10 during the day, no cross overs of players or coaches (for any sessions during the day) and remember no drills involving any contested play (including penalty corners, tackling or game play).
- Access to the fields is via the ambulance gates at the extreme corners. Players must enter and leave by their allocated gate (see the diagram at the end of the plan).
- No exceptions. Parents or supporters should remain in their cars, rather than coming in to the complex.
- No canteen, no bubblers, no dugouts. Players to bring your own water bottle. Taps will be available to refill bottles.
- Any parent/carer needing to enter the facility must also have their details listed.
- Not permitted: Any drill or activity requiring participants to move closer than 1.5m to another participant. Sitting around on the field not involved in group’s drills. No non-essential items to be taken onto the field.
- Uncontested drills only. Use of makers to identify spacing for drills.
- High touch areas of Marang will be sanitised between sessions, including gates and toilets.
Bosco Training sessions
Bosco will approach the Association to secure training places on the following Saturdays:
- 13th June
- 20th June
- 27th June
To attend a Bosco training session, you will need to register via the “Events” page on the Bosco website ahead of the date. With any luck, we can secure two half fields at the same time and have juniors and seniors training at either end, giving us 20 spots on each of those days.
There will definitely be a juniors session on these days. Seniors, you should consider if you would like to train on these days and let me know. I will try and get sessions around the middle of the day – no 8am starts.
We are not sure about what is happening at Sylvania, but we are hoping to be able to return to team training there on July 13th, with the season starting the following weekend.
In Summary
- Please read the attachments and follow the links to the checklists.
- Please book in for training sessions before the date
- Please do not come to training if you are feeling unwell or have a household member who is unwell
- Please follow the Association guidelines when attending Marang
- If you have any questions, please contact the Club and we will address those with you.

Michael Mecham
